Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS)

A Safe Work Method Statement or also referred to as SWMS is a document which frameworks activities and associated risk to any particular role in the workplace and ways which you can minimise your exposure to them.

SWMS are a necessary requirement for any construction work that encounters high risk activity which are outlined in Work Health Safety (WHS) Regulations. If it's a role on a job site which is regularly undertaken a general broad covering SWMS can be prepared and used for these tasks. Typically the document is then refined and altered over time as you engage with employees on site to improve the quality of the method statement template.

It's important to note that any new role undertaken in the workplace requires an additional SWMS to be created and used. There are no broad cover all job safety analysis documents. It's up to you to make sure you review and revise your SWMS and ensure they are in line with any high risk work undertaken in the workplace.
